CPS Services: Battery Testing

Communication Power Solutions, Inc. (CPS) offers cell site battery testing services, including a complete dynamic load test with full detailed reporting as well other related services.

A typical test consists of site inspection for battery physical condition (leaks, connection cleaning if needed, retorque of connectors, temperature checking, etc.), inspecting battery wiring and availability of disconnecting devices (fuses), provisioning of a temporary backup battery (typically 100 AH at system voltage), the actual load test, analysis of results, monitoring of initial recharge, and reporting of results. If battery failures are found, CPS can assist in preparing and executing warranty claims with any manufacturers.

The testing procedure also checks that battery float voltages are per specification and that shelter temperatures are as required for maximum battery life and warranty protection. A typical test setup is shown below and a sample test report is attached:

The testing is performed by trained personnel who understand telecommunication operational needs and the requirements for safety. CPS can provide customer references if needed. CPS has a contract with Verizon Wireless that covers the sale of batteries, installation and testing.

This type of battery testing typically costs $250-$1500 per battery string (depending on battery size/capacity, test time, and site location).

In addition to the discharge/capacity dynamic testing, CPS also offers a Site Survey/Audit that gathers information on the batteries in telecommunication sites while making a quick check for obvious problems.

The Site Survey/Audit provides data on:

• Details the battery model and serial numbers
• CAD site dimensions and layout of the battery stack(s), rectifiers, ladder rack and other nearby equipment to determine the available nearby space for possible battery and equipment options
• Operating cell and rectifier voltages, plant loads, and room temperature
• Visual check for leaks, potential problems, and hazards
• Other data that will help you manage your battery and site maintenance program

The CPS Site Survey as above costs $250 per site. The scope and price of the Site Survey/Audit can be modified to meet customer needs.
